Mascot Magic: How SUAP ART
Brought FIFA 2022's
LAAEEB to Life
For the 2022 FIFA World Cup hosted in Qatar, one of the most anticipated highlights was
the official mascot - Laʼeeb. In Arabic, Laʼeeb translates to "super-skilled player," and it is artistically
designed to represent the men's headdress, keffiyeh, celebrated in many parts of the Arab world.
SUAP ART had the prestigious task of turning this iconic symbol into tangible, larger-than-life figures.
Our journey began with a 3D drawing of the mascot. Using state-of-the-art 7-axis routers, we meticulously carved
the initial form out of foam, achieving precision in the varied poses ranging from 4.5 to 5.5 meters in height.
Post carving, molds were created from the foam structures. The choice of fiberglass for the mascots ensured
durability and finish. But our commitment to quality and public safety didn't stop there. Recognizing the popularity
the mascots would achieve, and anticipating the throngs of people wanting to interact with it, an internal essential. We fortified each figure with an internal steel structure, providing added strength
and ensuring it would withstand not just environmental factors but also potential vandalism.
The LAAEEB mascots, placed in strategic locations, were an instant success.
They became popular landmarks, drawing crowds, sparking interactions, and serving as the perfect
backdrop for countless photographs and online shares. More than just statues, they embodied
the spirit of the World Cup and the cultural richness of Qatar.
At SUAP ART, this project stands as a testament to our expertise in blending art with engineering.
Every project is a challenge, but it's the impact it leaves behind that makes it all worthwhile.
